Power BI – Data Types and Core Calculations is a practical course that has been designed to help learners understand how to manage data types, apply data categories, and perform basic calculations within Power BI Desktop. These foundational skills are essential for preparing data for accurate analysis and building meaningful visualizations. Learners will begin by exploring the concept of data types—such as text, whole numbers, decimals, and dates—and how Power BI interprets and formats them. The course also introduces data categories, including geocoding for mapping visualizations, and explains how assigning categories like “Country” can enhance report functionality. Participants will learn both how to inspect and modify data types and formats, ensuring that fields like IDs are treated as text and financial figures are formatted as currency. The course also covers how to use Power BI’s interface in order to identify field types using icons and symbols, such as calendars for dates and sigma for numeric fields. Finally, learners will create calculated columns using DAX (Data Analysis Expressions), including conditional logic to derive new insights from existing data. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped to manage data types and perform core calculations that support effective reporting and analysis.
