Course description

This chapter demystifies charting in Excel 2019 by focusing on clarity, context, and choice. You’ll explore when to use foundational visuals and how their conventions help audiences grasp comparisons, trends, and composition quickly. From there, you’ll examine supporting types like area, scatter (XY), combo, waterfall, funnel, maps, and other modern options, with guidance on when they add value and when they confuse. The course emphasizes clean data selection, labeling, and scale choices so charts reflect the story in your sheet rather than distort it: selecting ranges intentionally, excluding totals that skew scales, and aligning categories and series for honest comparisons. You’ll use Excel’s chart interface and the in-chart element controls to add or remove titles, legends, gridlines, data labels, and tables; manage axes and series; and apply styles that are readable in print or on screen. You’ll also practice right-sizing annotation (labels, callouts, and data tables) to avoid clutter, learn the pros and cons of stacked/100% stacked variants, and see how filtering and recommended charts can speed up iteration while staying faithful to the data’s meaning. By the end, you’ll be able to build charts that communicate at a glance, fine-tune their elements deliberately, and select the chart type that matches the question being asked.
