Course description
This course explains how to organize, refine, and summarize worksheet data using Excel’s sorting and filtering tools. It begins by distinguishing sorting, which rearranges rows into a chosen order, from filtering, which temporarily hides records that do not match selected criteria. You’ll explore single-column and multi-level sorts, when to use quick commands versus the Custom Sort dialog, and safeguards such as confirming headers, selecting within the dataset, and avoiding partial selections that can misalign records. Next, you’ll use column dropdowns to apply text, number, and date filters, combine conditions across columns, and work with options such as begins with, between, top or bottom items, and above or below average. The course also explains how clearing and reapplying filters helps manage changing views. You’ll see how converting ranges to tables supports more reliable sorting and filtering through consistent headers and dynamic ranges. Advanced Filter is introduced for copying filtered results or unique records to another location for analysis. Finally, you’ll review Subtotals for inserting summary lines at group changes, including when to sort before grouping and how to remove subtotals. By the end, you’ll understand how to create ordered views, isolate needed records, and present useful summaries without changing the underlying data.
