Course description

This course focuses on how to enhance data models in Excel 365 using formatting, PivotTables, PivotCharts, and calculated columns. Learners are guided through the benefits of applying formatting directly within the Power Pivot data model, such as setting date and currency formats. Doing so allows for consistent display in any PivotTable or PivotChart based on the model, reducing the need for additional formatting later. The course then demonstrates how to create PivotTables and PivotCharts using the data model, including how to access preset dashboard layouts directly from the model interface. Techniques are covered for customizing visuals, adjusting chart types, and integrating slicers for dynamic filtering across visuals. Learners observe how to quickly build and modify interactive dashboards with linked filtering functionality by connecting slicers to multiple charts within the same model. The final portion of the course covers calculated columns, which are used to generate new fields within a table based on row-level calculations. The instructor shows how to create explicit calculations—such as profit or sales tax—that are permanently embedded within the data model and automatically accessible in any PivotTable or PivotChart. Learners gain insight into how calculated columns differ from implicit PivotTable calculations, as well as how to use proper syntax for referencing fields in formulas. By applying these modeling practices, learners can build more reusable and efficient Pivot-based reports.
