Course description

This course explores how to enhance Excel data models using Power Pivot by importing data, setting data types, and creating table relationships. Learners are introduced to the variety of sources from which data can be brought into a Power Pivot model—including databases like Access, data feeds, and manual entries—while understanding the limitations of data cleaning within Power Pivot itself. The importance of using Power Query in Excel to prepare data before importing it into a model is emphasized. The course outlines best practices for organizing data to support relationship creation, including the need for common fields, consistent data types, and one-to-many relationships. A walkthrough of the import process from an Access database demonstrates how to bring multiple tables into the model and interpret any automatically generated relationships. Learners gain insight into the process of manually establishing relationships between tables by matching fields and ensuring compatible data structures. Additional instruction is provided on understanding and configuring data types within Power Pivot. The different data types supported by the model—such as text, whole number, decimal number, currency, Boolean, and date—are covered, along with their influence on formatting, relationship creation, and calculation behavior within PivotTables. The course concludes by demonstrating how to inspect and modify these types directly in the data model interface.
